bonatarte1 On a gray, chilly day, driving through gray, residential St. Jaques street in N.D.G. isn’t the most promising beginning to an excursion. Nervously searching for our destination, I almost missed it as I boggled at the name of the diner next door: “Die Ann’s”. But as I stepped in to be greeted by a counter packed with pies of all descriptions, I knew it would be worth the effort.

We were seated a cute, slightly nautically themed table – there were only two, along with a couple of stools at the counter. After much deliberating, my associate and I settled on splitting one Apple Crumble and one Pecan Pie, with a cup of coffee each.bonatarte3

The apple pie was wonderfully warm, crispy and sweet, with a great crumbly crust.  I would’ve wolfed down the whole thing if not for our pre-arranged pie-splitting. After the  sweet yet succulent apple pie, the pecan pie was a bit dissapointing – very heavy, and unpleasantly chewy. Perhaps washing it down with some coffee would be the solution? I was very excited to it, since the cafe claims to roast thier own beans. Unfortunately, I suspect the coffee had been sitting in the carafe for quite some time before it got to us and was rather dissapointing.

Regardless of some glitches, I’m certainly planning to re-visit – I daydream of all those tens of tempting pie flavours waiting to be sampled.
